The cradle of skiing is on the Arlberg: the Arlberg Ski Club was founded here in 1901. The Arlberg ski club is not only the oldest ski club in Austria, but also undoubtedly the most legendary ski club in the world.

Alpine skiing on the Arlberg was born on January 3, 1901: six friends founded the Arlberg Ski Club while stopping at the Hotel Hospiz. 111 years later, the legendary Arlberg Ski Club, based in St. Anton, has 7,300 members in 53 nations.

Three years after the founding of the Arlberg Ski Club, the first general ski race was held with tremendous effort, without climbing aids and with a great deal of enthusiasm: an absolute novelty in alpine sport that drew attention to skiing on the Arlberg.

The enthusiasm for skiing on the Arlberg continues to this day, and the list of successful racers who emerged from the Arlberg Ski Club is long. Hannes Schneider, the founder of the first ski school on the Arlberg and inventor of the “Stemmbogen”, Othmar Schneider, who won the first Alpine gold medal at the Olympic Games for Austria, Olympic and world champion Patrick Ortlieb or “the eagle from Arlberg”, Mario Matt: all of you are the pride and motivation for the Arlberg Ski Club.
